Create the Harriet Tubman Memorial Mosaic (Auburn)
June 24 @ 9:00 AM - June 25 @ 4:00 PM
“Art for Auburn” artists are creating a painted mural of Harriet Tubman, with a mosaic background, on the backside of Genesee Center in downtown Auburn from 9AM – 4PM on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 with rain dates on July 15 & 16 during the same timeframe.
The Harriet Tubman Memorial Mosaic is made possible, in part, with public funds from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program, administered locally by Auburn Public Theater and Finger Lakes Community Arts Grants (FLCAG). This project also has financial support for the Downtown Auburn BID, the Harriet Tubman Boosters and the Harriet Tubman Center for Justice & Peace. In-kind product donations towards the project were given by Whiting’s Wallpaper & Paints and Angelo’s Pizza.
Many local artists are working together on this, Project Manager Jesse Kline; fine artist Tony Clubine; ceramic artist Jen Gandee and technical artist, David Tobin. Syracuse muralist Tony Clubine is painting the portrait of Tubman on MDO board; the painting is 5’ high by 4’ wide and has a decorative gold border. Clubine is also painting and installing a Tubman name plate. Ceramic artist Jen Gandee has created two designs for the ornate border tile, which will complement Clubine’s design, and match the gold coloring.
Jesse Kline shared, “We believe these projects build community, plus create accessible public art that beautifies the downtown landscape. It’s heartwarming to see volunteers of all ages help create pieces designed by local artists that highlight the best of our community. I am happy to give Tubman the recognition that she so deserves with our latest installation.”
Volunteer help is needed and encouraged; people are welcome at any point during the installation, and can stay for a brief period, or longer. Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, and come ready to be creative! Please bring your own beverages, sheet pizzas will be donated by Angelo’s Pizza, a long-time Art for Auburn supporter.
